Meaning & Relationship
AI quietly reveals that meaning lives between things, never sealed inside them. An old idea, newly and vividly visible.
AI · Arising Interdependently
Arising is an open initiative for anyone caught between two worlds — drawn to what artificial intelligence is becoming, and to the wisdom traditions that have spent millennia asking what mind, meaning, and self really are. We bring them into the same room, gently, and let each speak to the other.
The Idea
For years the promise was that machines would think like us. What we built instead is stranger and more interesting: systems that seem to mean something without holding any meaning inside — that carry no fixed idea of a word, and yet respond, relate, and understand.
If that feels like a paradox, it's because we've inherited an old assumption — that meaning must live somewhere: out in the object, or in here in the mind. The wisdom traditions never accepted that. They have long taught that nothing carries its meaning alone; things arise together, in relation. Artificial intelligence, almost by accident, has become a living demonstration of exactly that.
That is the whole of it. Not that one side is right and the other wrong — but that each has been circling the same truth from a different direction, and has never quite been introduced to the other.
To understand a word, you never look inside it. You look at everything it stands in relation to — the words around it, the world it points at, the life it's used in. A machine does the same. So, when you're honest about it, do we.
Meeting Points
Each is an open thread — somewhere an idea from AI and an idea from the wisdom traditions turn out to be reaching for the same thing. You don't need a background in either to follow along.

AI quietly reveals that meaning lives between things, never sealed inside them. An old idea, newly and vividly visible.
02
What if having no fixed essence isn't a lack, but the very thing that lets something stay open — and respond at all?
03
How do we know what isn't there? It's subtler than it sounds — in a mind, and in a machine alike.
04
The gap between how something behaves and what is actually going on inside it — a distinction both fields keep rediscovering.
05
The traditions that thought hardest about easing suffering have something to say about how we build, and aim, these new minds.
06
One word the engineers and the contemplatives both landed on. They may mean more of the same by it than either yet realises.

Some pieces are a gentle way in. Others go deep. All of them are free, and published in the open.

Meaning does not live inside a mind, human or artificial. It arises between them. This site is a home for writing about that.

Arising is a non-profit effort — no product, no funnel, no hurry. It exists to hold open a space where AI and the wisdom traditions can genuinely meet, and to publish that inquiry freely for anyone who finds their way here.
Nothing here is doctrine, and no one needs to arrive convinced. Come from AI, or come from practice; come curious about one and open to the other. That openness is the whole method — and, it turns out, the whole point.
